Do young folks know how to cook a turkey?

Editor,

This letter will not see the light of day but I’ve got something on my mind. Maybe I’m just an old daydreamer. Anyway it’s like this.

All the turkeys given to needy families. I hope the majority get used.

I mean do some younger folks know how to cook a turkey?

I hope so.

The times we live in see many mothers working; they just do not have time for kitchen duties. Fast foods are popular, do some folks have a roasting pan or oven, and do they know how to use them? I asked my granddaughter if she could cook a turkey she said good question. I go on the Internet to find out.

I’m a 1922 model – times have changed but a turkey needs cooking, old mothers or new.

Turn on oven--put turkey in--take out when done!

I am not sure as to how young you are referring, but I am 24 years old, and have been cooking my own turkey for a few years now... This year I did go to family for christmas dinner, but typically for the past 3 or 4 years I have cooked turkey twice a year - thanksgiving and christmas :-)

Iva: That is a good question and it is one that I asked myself as well. I wonder how many of those turkeys are not cooked because the young women with kids end up going to their parents for Christmas dinner. Then they are left in the freezer and later in the spring thrown out. Perhaps some of the young people would like to comment on whether they honestly know how to cook them.

So Rose, what you are are saying is that we shouldn't give turkeys to young mothers with children who are short of food because they will end in the garbage because they don't know how to cook them.Who,in your opinion should get them? I have a suggestion, why don't you volunteer your time next Christmas and go along and show these young mothers how to cook a turkey, and if you're willing to go, I will go with you.
