Compost should be collected more frequently in summer

Although I’m a Nova Scotian living in Dartmouth, my relatives reside in Richmond, P.E.I. (Grand River).

I was surprised when it was mentioned that the compost cart is only emptied by the garbage collectors every two weeks. This is an open invitation to maggots in the heat of the summer.

Prince Edward Island has mastered refuse pickup and sorting whereas Nova Scotia isn’t there yet. However, we do pick up the compost cart weekly during the months of July and August to prevent maggots. Perhaps this service could be introduced to Islanders, especially since tourism is a major industry.

You have summertime tips on line. Perhaps these can be posted at cottage rental sites and appear in the Journal Pioneer on a regular basis.
