June is good time for families to act to ensure safety of seniors

Editor,
I strongly encourage families to take a potentially life-saving action during June, National Safety Month, by conducting safety checks of their aging parents' homes.

Nearly 2.2 million Canadian seniors visit emergency rooms every year with many of these injuries caused by home accidents.

ER doctors recommend that families conduct safety checks of their parents' homes at least once a year. To make this as easy as possible for families in our community, Home Instead Senior Care is making free home safety checklists available to seniors and their families.

In Summerside, Home Instead Senior Care has also sponsored the "Home Safe Home" program, created by the East Prince Seniors Initiative. This program has helped address safety concerns and provide safety information to nearly 100 seniors in the Summerside area.

To receive a free safety checklist, call our office at 1-866-573-8787 or access the checklist and other helpful resources at www.makinghomesaferforseniors.com.
