I was very excited to hear the announcement by Egmont MP Gail Shea on Thursday regarding the changes to the Employment Insurance regions.
This change now corrects an injustice that occurred in 1996 when the Liberals created the EI regions and made all of P.E.I. one region. What this did was effectively penalize rural Islanders and seasonal employees by artificially inflating the rate for everyone inside the capital region of Charlottetown.
The new regulation will now correct this injustice. The EI rate in Tignish and Souris will now accurately reflect the unemployment in the region and the nature of the seasonal economy.
This change in regulation did not happen overnight. This kind of effective change takes time.
Minister Shea saw the inequity and she worked with her cabinet colleagues and others within the system to find a solution.
This hard-working, dedicated Member of Parliament listened to Islanders and then delivered a solution. She did not attend public protests, she did not finger point, and she did not walk across the floor and join another party. No, she did her job!
I hope everyone who spent so much time criticizing our good MP and minister of Fisheries and Oceans, will now be equally vocal in supporting her good work. She deserves our thanks!
