Careful with the match, go easy on the well

Just a little more than a month ago one would not have thought this possible, but conditions on P.E.I. have become quite dry.

That has led to the province declaring that burning permits are not currently valid. It is also urging caution with any outdoor fires.

Some campgrounds have banned campsite fires.

Campers and all Islanders should think twice before flicking a lighter or striking a match. A lot more than the grass and trees around the campfire could go up in smoke if a little fire got out of control.

There is also concern that crops are suffering from lack of rain. That’s bound to generate more arguments for irrigation.

But, think about it: when conditions are dry, would we really want more water than normal pumped out of the ground?
