Tourism season is in full swing, the sun in shining (mostly) and the summer fun-times seem never ending.
But amidst all this levity there is an inescapable truth on the horizon.
(Pause for dramatic affect.)
Prince Edward Island’s next round of municipal elections is a little more than three months away.
According to Elections P.E.I. the day of reckoning is set for Monday, Nov. 3, 2014.
It seems hard to believe. Where did the time go?
But like it or not that date is rapidly approaching, which means it’s time to start thinking about all things political.
Of course many already are.
Journalists hear things, including who’s leaning towards running for mayor and council. There are some interesting names being bandied about.
Of course none of the rumours and speculation matter until all the paperwork is filled out and the official list of candidates is compiled.
It’s important to remember that whoever ultimately ends up on that list has a chance of leading this community through some interesting times.
Summerside of late seems to be balanced on a proverbial knife-edge.
There are signs that new life could be coming to this community. Projects like the redesign and completion of the old Dynasty Spa, the grand designs that the Summerside Port Corporation is cooking up for the waterfront, new housing and retail developments and dozens of other projects that probably aren’t in the public eye.
If these projects were to fail it would really take the wind out of this city’s sails.
So whom do we want leading us through these potentially choppy waters?
Anyone and everyone thinking about running should do so.
Know someone who would make a good councillor or mayor? Encourage them to run. The best leaders often have responsibility thrust upon them by others.
Good luck to any and all of the current council who are reoffering – but a strong field of candidates running in all the wards, and for the mayor’s chair, makes for a healthy democracy.

And may the best men and women win.
