It’s the week where the cream of the crop of Prince Edward Island’s music scene get a chance to shine and be recognized for their efforts.

Music P.E.I. Week is well underway and Island musicians have already taken the stage to show off their talents and, for some, picked up some hardware along the way.

Already, nine awards were handed out — the first Friday night at the House of Rock at the P.E.I. Brewing Company and eight on Saturday night in Summerside at the Country Jubilee, which was held at Harbourfront Theatre.

Throughout the week, at various different venues across the Island, showcases and performances will be held, providing the public a chance to get out and see some of the amazing talent this little province has to offer.

And there is no shortage of talent – or musical genres -- here, on Prince Edward Island.

The music stylings are as varied as the performers who take the stage.

No longer is this Island known only for traditional offerings featuring jigs and reels played on fiddles and guitars. Vibrant scenes in various genres, including hip-hop, country, rock, alternative and metal — just to name a few — are making not only the listening public take notice but those in the industry.

There are several musicians and groups that hail from this province that are seeing great success beyond the red soil. Instantly coming to mind are Tim Chaisson, Rose Cousins — who had a song featured on “Grey’s Anatomy” and is now a Juno Award winning artist — Paper Lions, Two Hours Traffic, Ashley Condon and Meaghan Blanchard, just to list a few.

These artists, who began playing and performing simply for the love of music and desire to share their talent, are doing what all performers dream of eventually doing with their music — making a living.

We, as a listening public, can help them do that by attending a show, buying a CD or downloading their latest song.

And this is the week that we can show our support.

With so many shows to be seen and so many varied performers set to take the stage, why not find a show near you and listen to an artist you’ve never heard before?

Chances are you will see one of our many talents shine and, just maybe, see a future star in the making.
