CHARLOTTETOWN – A town hall meeting on Medicare is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26,, at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel. Speakers include Maude Barlow, Mike McBane and Paul Moist. The public meeting is sponsored by Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Council of Canadians.
The public is also invited to a meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Trinity United Church Chapel, Charlottetown. The topic for discussion will be "Tax Havens and Loopholes: The Price We Pay." Speakers will be Dennis Howlett, executive director Canadians for Fair Taxes, and Senator Percy Downe.
A March for Medicare is also being organized for 12 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. Participants are asked to assemble at Trinity United Church at the corner of Prince and Richmond Streets in Charlottetown at 11:30 a.m. for the march to the P.E.I. Convention Centre at the foot of Queen St., where a rally will be held. The theme for the march is "Stand Up for Medicare: Take a leadership role against federal cuts to health transfer payments." Sponsors for the march are the P.E.I. and Canadian Health Coalitions.
