TIGNISH -- The first night of the herring season was an expensive one for a fishing boat crew from New Brunswick.
Their boat, out of Neguac, NB, was among a cluster of about 85 fishing boats on MacLeod’s Ledge, off North Cape Sunday night-Monday morning when it started taking on water.
Tignish fisherman, Kenneth LeClair said there were lots of boats in close quarters in what was otherwise a good night of fishing with good catches. The crew of the sinking boat, he said, was never in danger. Another New Brunswick boat pulled along side and they were able to hop to safety.
He said the incident occurred in relatively calm water between 2 and 3 a.m. He said the boat was taken in tow but sank in about 60 feet of water a little over a kilometer from where the rescue mission originated. Buoys were tied to the vessel to mark its location.
