Meet and Greet for teams Wednesday

TIGNISH -- There are tonnes of reasons for excitement as the 2014 MacLeod’s Ledge Tuna Cup off Tignish draws near.

“The tuna are here, big time,” said event coordinator Anne Arsenault. There are nine teams registered for the third annual event which starts Wednesday night with a Meet and Greet for the teams at the Heritage Inn in Tignish. The actual fishing takes place Thursday and Friday. Boats can hit the water by 8 a.m. each day and teams have until 5 p.m. to measure a fish in the catch and release tournament.

There’s afternoon golf for teams that finish up early as well as evening receptions and entertainment, and a closing banquet.

Arsenault is confident teams on the nine charter boats will get to experience the thrill of the catch. She said a charter boat was on MacLeod’s Ledge on Monday and reported the world’s largest game fish were teeming. “He said, ‘They’re jumping out of the water. There’s tonnes of them.’”

MacLeod’s Ledge is a well-known tuna feeding area.

The defending champion team, Controls and Equipment, is back, as well as the winning team from 2012, P.E.I. Tourism. West Isle Enterprises is also returning. A member of their team from last year has spawned a new team.

Other teams new to the tournament include one captained by Denis Potvin of New York Islanders’ fame, and two teams from Trout River Industries.

Potvin, who was part of the Islanders’ 1980-83 Stanley Cup-winning teams, spent the last four NHL seasons calling televised games for the Ottawa Senators. He was recently rehired as colour analyst for Florida Panthers’ televised games on Fox Sports.

Teams are permitted to measure up to two tuna per day from a maximum of three fish hooked per day.
