SUMMERSIDE — A 40-year-old city man who went on a theft spree earlier this summer was sentenced Monday to 50 days in jail.

David Wade Smith pleaded guilty in Summerside provincial court to four theft charges and two breach of probation charges.

The first theft occurred on June 10 at 3 p.m. Police were called to the Superstore after staff saw Smith enter, place condoms, a bottle of lubricant and a package of chicken under his jacket before he left the store without paying.

The incident was also caught on the store’s surveillance. The items, valued at $63, were not recovered.

The second theft, just six days later, took place at Prestige Kitchens.

Just before noon, Smith entered the store and was caught on video surveillance entering one of the offices. It was discovered that $240, which was not recovered, had been stolen.

The third theft occurred on July 23. Smith returned to the Superstore, this time stealing $300 worth of merchandise, which was not recovered.

Two days later, Smith stole a wallet out of the purse of a customer at Norma’s Barbershop. Before throwing away the wallet, he took out $50. Minutes later, he was confronted and arrested, the money and wallet recovered by police.

The breach of probation charges involved failing to report to his probation officer and failing to undergo assessment, counselling and treatment for his drug addiction.

Smith’s extensive and related record was filed with the court. He was on probation when he committed the crimes.

Crown attorney John Diamond recommended a sentence totalling eight months on all of the charges followed by probation.

Smith’s lawyer, Trish Cheverie, said her client is “suffering from a serious narcotic addition,” adding that “he’s going to have to deal with that sooner or later.”

Judge Jeff Lantz agreed with the recommended sentence, crediting Smith, who was arrested on July 25, behind bars since by consent, with 30 days time served — or time and a half.

Once out of jail, Smith will be on probation for 18 months, during which time he must pay $600 in victim surcharges and restitution to the Superstore and Prestige Kitchens. He was also ordered to stay away from those businesses, as well as Norma’s Barbershop.
