Vehicle restrictions in place for Kensington Community Harvest festival

KENSINGTON – The Kensington Police Department is advising motorists of restrictions that will be put in place during the Kensington Community Harvest Festival parade and road race on Sat. Aug 16.

The parade route starts at the Queen Elizabeth Elementary School on Victoria Street East; travels west to Davison Street, north on Davison to Pleasant Street; west on Pleasant to Broadway Street, Broadway south to School Street, east on School to Woodleigh Drive, west on Woodleigh to Commercial Street, north on Commercial to Broadway Street, south on Broadway Street to traffic lights; west on Victoria Street to Garden Drive, south on Garden to completion at Kensington arena. 

Police Chief Lewie Sutherland said there will be no parking on Victoria Street, Davison Street, Pleasant Street, Broadway Street, School Street, Woodleigh Drive (between School and Commercial), Commercial Street, and Garden Drive. 

He said these streets are being closed for the safety of the spectators and the participants of the parade. Any vehicles parked in the parade route will be towed.

The following streets will be closed at 1:50 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.: Route 6 (Victoria Street) at Saunders Lane, Route 101 (Irishtown Road) at intersection with Davison and Pleasant, Route 20 (Broadway Street) at intersection with Pleasant Street, Route 2 (Broadway Street) at the traffic lights, Route 2 (Victoria Street West) at intersection with Garden Drive, Garden Drive and Barrett Street. 

Alternate routes around Kensington would be Route 2 to Route 107 (Blue Shank Road) and Route 2 and Macintyre Road to Route 107.  Travelling on Route 6 from Cavendish and from Route 101 Irishtown Road from Park Corner, alternate route would be Route 20 north around the coast.  

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the Kensington Road Race starts on Route 225 in Stanchel, into the village of Kinkora, then onto Route 109 continuing on the 109 via Freetown, crossing the Blue Shank Road onto the Kelvin Road to Garden Drive finish.  Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in these areas. There will be approximately 75 runners on the road between Stanchel and Kensington.
