Greyhound lovers gather in Summerside for meet and greet

SUMMERSIDE – About a year ago, Jason McCarville decided to adopt a greyhound.

Jeffrey Haight cuddles up to Ava, a retired greyhound looking to be adopted. Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada held a meet and greet at Pet Value on Saturday in Summerside.

He was at Pet Value in Summerside on Saturday with his adopted greyhound, Zeus, and other owners and their dogs to spread the word about what they feel is a great dog breed.

It was a meet and greet hosted by Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC) to educate the public about how the dogs make the perfect pet and what the adoption process is like.

All of the greyhounds are retired from racetracks in Florida and are usually between the ages of two and four.

“We call them ‘lucky losers’ because once their career is done they can find a forever home,” said McCarville.

He said the dogs spend the early part of their lives in kennels and have a job to do, but now they can be happy as family pets.

Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds don’t need a lot of exercise, said McCarville.

He added greyhounds are friendly and gentle, and are even suited for people who live in apartments.

“They make amazing pets. They’re unbelievable.”

Cindy MacNevin, volunteer and co-ordinator for the P.E.I. division of GPAC, had Ava with her, a greyhound in foster care in Charlottetown who is looking to be adopted.

MacNevin said people wanting to adopt find the process goes very well.

It consists of a home visit and interview to ensure it’s a suitable environment for the dog and some training on how best to meet their needs, she said.

The kennel is in Nova Scotia and applicants can receive an invitation a week after applying to go over to meet the greyhounds.

MacNevin said the meet and greet went very well and they had people coming in to learn and experience how passive and caring the dogs are.

“We’re here promoting the breed and showing people how great they are.”
