SUMMERSIDE – Talk about a nice way to start off a turn at being the boss.

Ron Gallant, incoming president of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association 200 Wing, Summerside, helped accept an award Tuesday on behalf of his whole organization.

The RCAFA was awarded this year’s George Key Sr. Memorial Award for Summerside citizen of the year.

It was a real honour, said Gallant, after the ceremony at Spinnakers’ Landing on Tuesday.

“It’s wonderful, wonderful publicity for the 200 Wing … to have it here and presented in front of all these people. It’s more than we could have asked for, a real honour,” he said.

The citizen of the year award is presented annually in Summerside as part of the Canada Day celebrations.

The recipient is chosen by a three-person committee appointed by the City of Summerside.

This year’s committee chairman, Les Chipperfield, told a crowd of a few hundred spectators at the landing that RCAFA 200 Wing has contributed immensely to the community of over years.

Founded in 1950, 200 Wing has been the sole sponsor of financial support for the Air Cadet 53 C.E. Monty Squadron, based in Slemon Park.

“During the last 60 years some 4,000 young people from our surrounding area have become better Canadian citizens because of the training they received in the Air Cadet 53 Monty Squadron,” said Chipperfield.

He added that 200 Wing also supports the aviation maintenance program at Three Oaks Senior High and have been big supporters of the Air Force Heritage Park in Slemon Park, among various other community projects, charities and programs.

“The Wing is an extraordinary supporter of our city,” he said.

Outgoing president of the organization (July 1 was his last day) Danny Gosse accepted the award on behalf of his fellow members.

It means a lot to them, said Gosse.

“It’s a tremendous recognition of what we do in the community,” he said.
