SUMMERSIDE – Harbour Drive is no more as of today.
Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart officially proclaimed the renaming of the street Tuesday, during the Canada Day celebrations, to Heather Moyse Drive.
Announced several weeks ago, the change was made to honour Moyse’s accomplishment in sport (she’s a two-time Olympic bobsleigh gold medalist) and to thank her for her long-time support of her hometown of Summerside and the province in general.
However, nobody told Moyse until just before the event that she would be asked to speak, which she made light of when she got to the microphone.
“They probably asked me to speak last minute knowing that whatever I’d say I’d probably just end up bawling. I get very emotional when I talk about P.E.I.,” she said.
Right on cue Moyse started to tear up and took a few moments to compose herself.
The multi-sport athlete didn’t stay at the ceremony long, for which she apologized profusely, but she had another engagement in Charlottetown.
At one point, after Moyse hadn’t spoken for several seconds but was still standing at the microphone, an organizer apparently thought she was done speaking, so they stood up and started went over to the podium.
Moyse just laughed and choked out something about just not being able to speak.
The red-faced announcer quickly sat back down, to much guffaw from the crowd.
“What do you say when you’re given a street?” asked Moyse, finally.
“I’m at a little bit of a loss for words but it truly is an honour – thank you.”
