Charlottetown is second in the nation for slashing the cost of hotel bookings this Canada Day, says an Internet discount travel site.

Hotwire is declaring Charlottetown as one of the top affordable domestic destinations for travellers booking hotels over the Canada Day weekend. The website itself, however, does not appear to promote this finding.

The travel site puts Charlottetown in the number two spot, just after Niagara Falls, but ahead of Banff, Quebec City and Montreal.

Niagara Falls has a price drop of 18 per cent compared to 2013, while Charlottetown is showing a 17 per cent price drop for hotel bookings on Canada Day weekend, says Hotwire.

"Even though all of these cities are in peak season, visitors can expect to pay shoulder season prices and save up to 18 per cent compared to last year," says a statement from the company.

Pierre Etienne-Chartier, vice-president of the Hotwire Group, said that Canada Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year for many Canadians, making it a popular time to take a long weekend getaway and celebrate somewhere nearby.

“However, while many are planning to head to large cities with larger price tags like Toronto and Vancouver, there are other delightful spots across the country that are offering fantastic deals and experiences.”

I have to travel a lot for my business, mostly in Europe and Asia, but often in the states to cities like Las Vegas. I used to use sites like Travelocity to book my flights and lodging, but I stumbled upon the better way to find deals: go to the second level sites - those like who compare the hundreds of different booking sites in one single search. You'll not only see Trivago or Expedia deals, but ALL OF THEM in one place. I must have saved over 3,000 Euros since I started using them. I sincerely believe that using only one of the top booking sites is not necessarily the best idea.
