TIGNISH -- Irish Moss Festival coordinator Chancey Gaudette and committee member Chavonne Gavn are up to their elbows in what looks to be red paint. It’s actually cornstarch, water and food coloring, they confide.

They’ve been mixing up batches of paint in shades of red, purple, green and blue during the day, then taking it to their homes and baking it by night.

Their children get in on the action once the “paint” is cooked, helping to crumble the paint cakes until the product returns to a fine powder consistency, something like coloured corn starch.

“Kids love it,” Gavin said of their eager helpers. “We listened to the hoedown Saturday night and played with this,” she said, gesturing to the buckets of powder. They use kiddie pools to mix their paints. Those same pools will be used in game booths during the June 26 to July 1 festival.

The festival volunteers are intent on creating 250 pounds of the powder in four colours for the festival’s first ever Run Wild in Colour event. It will leave from Tignish Bientennial Park, Saturday, June 28 at 10 a.m.. Participants will run two and a half kilometers out the Confederation Trail before turning and running back to the start line. Along the way, volunteers will generously dust runners with the coloured powder.

Run Wild in Colour has captured the interest of many area runners. Already, 125 people are registered for the fun event and organizers are optimistic they will reach their target of 250 participants.

To draw as much colour as possible, participants are encouraged to wear white t-shirts and to wear glasses or sunglasses.

Runners can join up for Run Wild in Colour by calling the Tignish Recreation Office, 882-2600.

A colour party will be held for participants following the run where the rest of the paint will be generously utilized.
