Art will placed around the city starting Monday

SUMMERSIDE – Jackie Whelan will be one of 17 Island artists anxiously gathered tonight for the unveiling of Lighthouse 2014.

Whelan and the others have each applied their own unique design to a six-foot-tall lighthouse as part of the new project.

She said most of her work incorporates a lot of colour and she loves being able to share what she creates.

“That makes you feel good that people enjoy your work as much as you enjoy making it,” she said.

Now, the public has the chance to take in the works of art by Whelan and the 16 other submission winners at the Summerside Loyalist Country Inn.

Alex Maine, a spokesman for the project, said the reveal night will include two separate showings from 7 until 8 p.m. and from 8 until 9 p.m.

“The demand for tickets has been extreme. I guess that’s a good indication that the public liked the idea,” said Maine.

He said tickets are still available online at lighthouse2014.com.

On Monday, June 16, the lighthouses will be placed around the city for everyone to enjoy, he said.

“If you’re wandering around doing your daily business, you’re going to bump into these works of art. I think it’s something everyone can appreciate.”

The purpose of these decorated lighthouses is to showcase Island talent and to enhance the art scene in Summerside.

Tracy Stretch, marketing manager for the Journal Pioneer, said it was a good fit for the paper to be a sponsor of Lighthouse 2014.

“The Journal Pioneer decided to embrace this project because it incorporates the whole city. As the newspaper reaches out to the communities, the lighthouses are reaching out to the communities, as well.”

Stretch said it’s a great project and allows visitors to become engaged in Summerside.

“It’s neat to see how artists across the Island have depicted P.E.I. on a lighthouse.”
