TIGNISH -- Municipal Council here has agreed to work with the RCMP and the Tignish parish to help curtail loitering and disturbances in the St. Simon and St. Jude Church parking lot.

“As we all know, we’re having a problem with some garbage and different things that’s happening in the churchyard,” council chair Allan McInnis commented.

“It’s just disrespect of the churchyard by a few young people who should have better sense,” offered McInnis in describing what has been happening in the parking lot, especially at night.

“They had a barbecue the other night, right in the middle of the churchyard,” added police committee chair Judy Morrissey-Richard.

The parish will erect a pole and council will cover the electrical cost for a new streetlight for illuminating the parking area. Signage is also being posted to discourage loitering and to give RCMP officers on patrol more authority to move people along.
