CHARLOTTETOWN -- The leader of the Prince Edward Island New Democrats, Mike Redmond, says his party is onside with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s call for effective public disclosure of MLA expenses.

“We absolutely agree with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation on this point,” said Redmond. “The expenses of the people that Islanders elect should all be publicly presented in detail.”

Redmond said the Alberta standard, where receipts are scanned and posted online, should be available here.

“Having pushed increased costs on Islanders through the HST and millions of dollars in fee increases, the Liberal government should make a special effort to provide as much information as possible on the expenses of their MLAs to the Island public,” Redmond insisted. He said new NDP MLAs elected in the next provincial election will not be content with status quo and will push for full disclosure. He pointed out the NDP have, for well over a year, been pushing for stronger freedom of information legislation affecting municipalities, post-secondary institutions and the legislature. He criticized opposition MLAs for not supporting that position.
