SUMMERSIDE - Farm Credit Canada’s recent departure from Summerside is deeply disappointing, says the president of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce.

“As a community in the centre of an agricultural district, we really can’t understand how our city wouldn’t be a good location for their operations,” said chamber president Jonathan Greenan. “Our understanding is that it was a business decision to merge the Summerside operations into the Charlottetown office. And while the Chamber certainly supports the concept of fiscal responsibility, we would have hoped that social consciousness might have played a role in the decision as well.”
As a financially self-sustaining federal Crown corporation, Farm Credit Canada reports to Parliament through the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
“If you scan the FCC website, you’ll certainly see references to their commitment to rural communities,” Greenan said. “But it doesn’t appear that they consulted with anyone before they made this decision. We would have hoped for better from an agency of our federal government.”
