TIGNISH -- After a winter lull, ATV activity in Tignish has picked up again, Tignish council has observed.

Council had a lengthy discussion on ATV activity during its May meeting and they plan to discuss the situation further with the RCMP and the St. Simon and St. Jude church committee.

Concern was expressed about the machines gathering in the church parking lot and with the operators leaving garbage around.

Late last year council hosted a public information session to address ATV activity and to explain the rules regarding off-road vehicle use. Council chair Allan McInnis subsequently speculated the drop in wintertime activity was due to the public information session, the cold weather, or both.

Council is considering adding more lighting at the church lot to deter nighttime activity there and to make the community's surveillance cameras more effective.
