TIGNISH -- Disconnections are slated to start in Tignish this Wednesday for sewer and water utility customers who are behind in their bills.
Although the list of customers in arrears is longer than that, Tignish Council has identified a dozen customers for immediate disconnection. There will be two disconnections daily, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., until the list is exhausted. Customers can avoid a disruption in service by paying their bills before the equipment arrives. Those slated for disconnection Wednesday were to be notified Tuesday in hopes that they would pay up.
Sewer disconnect involves digging up the line while water utility disconnect is simply a matter of turning off the water supply.
One customer was shut off last fall and has not been reconnected, opting instead to vacate the property.
The cost for sewer and water services is $180 and $320 respectively per year per household.
Council, during its monthly meeting Monday night, decided that, with $30,000 owing to the sewer and water utilities, it was time to take action.
