Proposing licence be valid for three years
SUMMERSIDE - Summerside city council will be considering a change to its licensing bylaw for mobile sales establishments.
Out to Lunch.
Councillor Cory Thomas, chairman of the city’s technical services committee, raised the issue at the May committee meeting after a request was received from Kevin Wile and Donnie Gallant to operate the ‘Out To Lunch’ food trailer at their Butcher Shop business location on Central Street.
Council did approve a similar application for a licence last year, and the operation was a success, earning the distinction ofbeing rated one of the top 10 food trucks in Canada by Readers Digest.
The committee recommended to council that the application be approved and will deal with it at the city council meeting May 22.
Thomas said he would like to see the bylaw reviewed to lessen red tape for qualified business operations.
“There have been no issues and I don’t know if it should have to come to council every year for renewa," he saidl. "I think that perhaps a review by the chief administrative officer, human resources and legal affairs and the director of the department can look at perhaps having it go up for renewal every three years.”
Wile and Gallant will open up the food truck in May and run until September from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday.
Aaron MacDonald, director of technical services said the applicant has requested permission to be able to operate at two locations during the May to September timeline but, unlike last year, had not provided the department with the second location.
“The only issue is that last year he gave us the second location,” MacDonald said. "He did do a couple of one-day requests (last year) for someone. He gave us the information and a letter of permission from the property owner.”
MacDonald asked council if the applicants come up with a second location and the letter of permission, will the issue have to go council for approval or can technical services staff process the request for an additional location?
Council directed staff to do the necessary paperwork to permit the use of an alternative location.
