Man jailed on shoplifting charges

SUMMERSIDE  - A 41-year-old Summerside man was sentenced to 33 days in jail after pleading guilty in Summerside provincial court, Thursday, to three charges of shoplifting and for failure to appear in court.

Christopher Trent Rogers plead guilty to three thefts over a two-day period in November.

Rogers pled guilty to stealing a DVD play from Shopper’s Drug Mart on Nov. 24. The DVD was valued at $89.99 and was not recovered.

Rogers also pled guilty to two additional counts of shoplifting Nov. 26. The first was at Sobeys when the accused, along with another man, stole three gift baskets from the store. As they ran through the parking lot Rogers’ accomplice fell dropping two of the gift baskets. Rogers continued on his way with the other.

The gift basket was valued at  $14.99 and was not recovered.

The second theft occurred at Compaq Computers. Rogers and another man entered the store and Rogers reached over a counter and took a Samsung tablet.

An employee gave chase but couldn’t catch Rogers. However, a passing motorist witnessed the chase, cornered Rogers and retrieved the tablet.

The tablet, valued at $249.90, was not damaged and was resalable.

Judge Jeff Lantz sentenced Rogers to 10 days on each theft charge with the sentences to run concurrently. He also sentenced Rogers to three days on the charge of failing to appear in court. The total time to be served is 13 days.

In addition to the jail time, Rogers was placed on probation for 12 months, ordered to pay restitution to Shopper’s Drug Mart in the amount of $89.99 and to Sobeys for $14.00. Rogers was also directed to pay a victim fine surcharge of $400.
