SUMMERSIDE - A 22-year-old Summerside man was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty in Summerside provincial court, Wednesday, to possession of child pornography.

Prince County Courthouse.

Sheldon Richard Cole was arrested by Summerside police on June.

Crown prosecutor David O’Brien said Summerside police received information from Charlottetown that they had been advised by Saskatoon Police of an individual in Summerside who had been detected through Operation Snapshot, a Maritime wide operation dealing with child pornography.

Police executed a search warrant for Cole’s residence and removed a desktop computer, a lap top computer and an external hard drive.

Cole refused to provide police with the password to the lap top computer but officers were able to gain access through another program.

In total police discovered 657 child pornography movies and 1,991 child pornographic images on the various computers.

Judge Jeff Lantz, defense counsel Trish Cheverie and O’Brien recessed the case to view the material seized by police.

Back in the courtroom Lantz said there are five categories relating to child pornography and the material that Cole had covered all five.

They ranged from images of exotic posing to those involving bondage and bestiality.

In handing down the sentence, Lantz said viewing such images has a “haunting effect” and that they are “images that no one should have to see.”

The judge said the children in the photos and movies are “abused and victimized in perpetuity.”

In addition to the jail time, Cole was placed on two years probation and will be included in the registry of sexual offenders for 10 years.

He may only use Internet services for job search or educational purposes and must consent to police searching all his Internet capable devices for child pornography.

Cole was also charged with possession of a dangerous weapon. Police discovered four knives in Cole’s bedroom which were not licensed.

Lantz suspended passing of sentence on the charge and placed Cole on a year’s probation.
