SUMMERSIDE – Firefighters had to use a hydraulic rescue tool to free a woman trapped in her car on Summerside’s Notre Dame Street Monday morning.

The woman was the driver of a sedan that collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Notre Dame and Duke Streets.

That intersection has stops signs on the Duke Street sides.

Police say the crash is still under investigation, but charges could be pending.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and will be released later today. The driver of the truck, a man, was examined by paramedics and released.

Residents watching nearby remarked that this intersection is prone to crashes and that it has seen a handful of incidents already this year.

The intersection has come up before City Council on at least two occasions, most recently in February.

A request from the public to make it a four-way stop was denied by the technical services committee after the request received no support from an earlier meeting of the police services committee.

During that meeting, Police Chief David Poirier said that in the past two years there had been only three crashes (to that date) at the intersection and all were caused by driver error.

Poirier said that people seem to get confused because there are two other four-way stops on that stretch of Notre Dame Street, those being the intersections with Rufus Street and Northumberland Street.

Police are reminding the public to use caution at the intersection of Notre Dame and Duke and to always be on the lookout for road signage, or in this case the lack thereof.

It doesn't need to be a 4 way stop. What is wrong with the drivers who think it is? All 4-way stops in the City have a sign on them saying it is a 4-way stop. This intersection doesn't have a sign, so why do LOCAL residents have a problem with it?

time for a roundabout. the city needs to copy the capital city. or maybe one of the drivers were drunk or having a coffee.
