One Charlottetown call centre enjoying relatively good fortune could come calling on a large number of employees facing layoffs from a similar business in the city.
Atelka is adding 200 new customer contact jobs in Charlottetown. The company hopes it will be able to fill the positions.
Atelka CEO Georges Karam says his company could absorb 80 or more people at another local call center that lost a major client.
The Guardian reported in late February that HGS Canad told its employees their jobs would end on April 14. The call centre’s services with its client, believed to be the technology giant Apple, are set to end on that date according to a letter presented to the employees. The Guardian obtained a copy of the letter.
More than 100 P.E.I. employees are likely to be affected by these potential layoffs. Atelka may be able to provide work to a large number of them.
Karam says Atelka has added 165 positions to the Charlottetown site in the West Royalty industrial park since October.

The company has over 260 agents and their respective support staff working in the capital city facility with more than 95 per cent of these being full time positions with hourly wages ranging from $10.20 to $11.20.
Immediate hiring plans include training classes in April and May.
“However, we’re prepared to open up additional classes in order to protect Islanders from loss of jobs at another local call centre that has announced its possible closure,’’ says Karam.
“Our clients have always encouraged expansion of their business in Charlottetown. Our growth since October 2013 is just a sign of things to come.’’
Atelka mainly services Canadian clients in the telecommunications industry. The type of work ranges from inbound call handling to eChat, data entry and back office order processing.
