Council approves grants

ALBERTON -- Alberton finance chairman David Cahill put through a $798,402 operating budget for 2014 at the town’s annual meeting Monday night.

The balanced budget will be achieved without any increase in municipal taxes. They stay at 56 cents per $100 assessment for non-commercial properties and $1.05 per $100 for commercial properties.

Cahill received council approval on motions that the town provide grants of $2,000 each to the Alberton Library, Alberton Museum and Western Community Curling Club. The Jacques Cartier Arena gets a $5,000 operating grant, the Alberton Development Corporation gets $1,500 and $1,000 goes to the Alberton Business Association.

Also approved was a two per cent cost of living wage increase for all full time staff members presently employed with the town.

The sewer account operating budget was approved in the amount of $145,500. Council approved a motion to loan the sewer account $95,570 to cover the town’s share of a sewer replacement project on Argyle and Central Streets and Elizabeth Drive.
