SUMMERSIDE – Central Bedeque is teaming up with the City of Summerside for its Kraft Hockeyville bid.
The smaller community’s rink, the Bedeque Recreation Centre, is in need of repairs and until recently was in danger of closing.
However, their bid to be Canada’s 2014 Hockeyville has breathed some new life into the old building, garnering them support from across the Island.
The winning community receives $100,000 in upgrade money for their rink and the right to host an NHL pre-season game.
Summerside is helping out by encouraging its residents to vote for Central Bedeque if they make the latest round of cuts for the contest. The long-list of 16 communities will be announced Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada on CBC.
The two communities have also agreed that if Central Bedeque were to win the top prize then the NHL game would be played at Eastlink Arena at Credit Union Place. The Bedeque Recreation Centre is not large enough to accommodate such an event.
“This partnership is a win-win for both Bedeque and Summerside.” said Kevin Schurman, chairman of the Bedeque Recreation Centre.
“We as Islanders have to come together to make this happen.” added Summerside Councillor Jim Steele, chairman of the city’s Community Services Committee.
If Central Bedeque makes the cut to the list of 16 voting will be open from 11 p.m., March 8, to 11 p.m., March 10, at www.krafthockeyville.ca.
