P.E.I. 2014 events continue Islandwide

CHARLOTTETOWN – The first two months of the P.E.I. 2014 celebrations have seen successful events and activities taking place right across Prince Edward Island.


More events will be rolled out provincewide during the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference.

“We’re inspired by the hard work and passion displayed by the communities and groups who are presenting P.E.I. 2014 events and activities,” said Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson. “It is because of the dedication of Islanders right across our province that PEI 2014 will be a great success and leave a lasting legacy.”

PEI 2014 events and activities scheduled for the month of March:

Celebrating 150 Years with 150 Community Programs and Celebrations: March 1 to Dec. 31.  Go!PEI will deliver a walking heritage passport program, bi-monthly healthy living challenges and community programs to engage 20,140 Islanders to explore their

heritage, increase physical activity and healthy eating habits. Go! PEI is now accepting online registrations. www.gopei.ca

Captured through a Different Lens - Public photo contest aims to highlight the many changes in P.E.I.’s surroundings over the past 50, 100, or even 150 years and is

now accepting submissions. Entrants are encouraged to find an old image and capture the same scene today with a camera. Categories include Most Changed, Least Changed and Best Recreation. Photos can be submitted to the Eptek Centre in Summerside for a chance to win cash prizes. Submissions will be accepted until Sept. 6 www.peimuseum.com

Miltonvale Park – 2014 Minutes of Stories & Song: March 7 - Miltonvale Park will host the third installment of its 2014 Stories & Song series.  On the first Friday of every month Milton Community Hall will play host to an evening of music and tales that celebrate P.E.I. and its way of life. www.miltonvalepark.com

History is Art: March 8 - The Community of Hunter River presents “History is Art” on March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Hunter River Community Centre. Three pieces of art by local artists reflecting the life and history of Hunter River will be unveiled.

Festival Hiver Divers: March 8 to 22 - The WinterGrow Festival features a program of activities celebrating the traditions, customs, arts, and culture of the Canadian francophonie. The festival will take place in the francophone communities of Tignish, Évangéline region, Summerside, Rustico, Charlottetown and Souris. www.fcipe.ca

Strength in YOUth, Celebrating Traditions...Creating Opportunities! March 12 - Youth will have an opportunity to explore the evolution of entrepreneurship on P.E.I. and foster an exchange of ideas about Prince Edward Island's entrepreneurial heritage and brainstorm about future business ideas March 12 at the Mill River Resort. A

Seniors Entrepreneurship Forum will also take place at the same location

on March 19. This forum is designed specifically for area residents 50 and older and will provide information on local labour market trends and opportunities for self- employment.  www.westprinceyouthforum.com

Kellys Cross Family Fun Festival: March 16 – Continuing with their year-long calendar of activities, a St. Patrick’s ceilidh will be held at the Kellys Cross Community Centre on March 16. The Community Centre will continue to host ceilidhs the third Sunday of

every month in 2014.

Dr. Magnificent’s Travelling Musical Medicine Show: March 25 to May 11 - This musical comedy will take a playful poke at the goings on during the 1864 Charlottetown Conference. The production will tour  seniors' venues, community centres and halls across P.E.I. Festival du bon vieux temps: March 30 - Events will be held at le Centre acadien de Prince-Ouest.  Events will be held the last Sunday of each month for the year. The next event is scheduled for March 30. www.seperrey.org
