Public will get to vote for their favourite

SUMMERSIDE — The list of possible names for the Souris kindergarten to Grade 12 school has been narrowed down to four.

English Language School Board chairman Fred Osborne (left) said the hope is to hold the next board meeting in Souris, at which time the recommended name for the K-12 Souris school will be presented.

And the public will have a chance to vote for the one they want to see on the school.

Jeff Chapman, board trustee and member of the ad hoc committee for naming the new school, gave an update on the process at the English Language School Board’s monthly meeting held in Summerside Tuesday.

On Feb. 12, the committee held a public meeting at Souris Consolidated School to gauge interest and gather input on naming of the school. Only 11 people attended.

The public was invited for submissions on names for the K-12 school, abiding by the following criteria: the school name cannot exceed 30 characters; when possible, a brief explanation of the name choice; and contact name and information.

Criteria also indicated that appropriate names may focus on the location of the school; significant historical or cultural events; and recognition of persons who have made outstanding contributions to the country, community or public service.

A total of 31 names were submitted.

On Feb. 25, by the ad hoc committee reviewed the list, narrowing it down to four — East Kings Academy, Souris Collegiate, Souris Regional School and Souris Academy.

Chapman said those names will be advertised in the local weekly and daily newspapers, along with information on how eligible residents can vote on which name they would like to see on the new K to 12 school.

Those eligible must be of school age or older; reside in the school zone or have a student, including families who are attending Souris Consolidated or Souris Regional High from out of the zone areas; or be a current staff member of Souris Consolidated or Souris Regional High.

At the time of voting, people will be asked their name, address and phone number.

Voting will take place on March 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. and March 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Souris Consolidated and Souris Regional High, and March 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Souris Consolidated only.

Kindergarten to Grade 12 students will have a chance to vote during school hours.

On March 11, the ad hoc committee will meet to review the voting results and presents its recommendation at the public board meeting on March 25.

Board chairman, Fred Osborne, said following the meeting the hope is to have that meeting held in Souris.
