SUMMERSIDE — The police investigation into an assault involving a firearm Saturday evening in the city is ongoing.

Summerside Police Services

Summerside police deputy chief Sinclair Walker said Monday interviews in connection with the incident were ongoing.

“We anticipate laying charges past tomorrow morning,” said Walker, who didn’t want to comment on what criminal charges may be laid.

City police responded to a call just before 8 p.m. Saturday on Industrial Crescent off Pope Road where it was reported a man was assaulted with a firearm and a wooden object. A woman was also allegedly assaulted with the same wooden object.

A section of the road was closed for about an hour.

Officers interviewed witnesses into the night in an attempt to determine how the incident unfolded and what type of firearm was used.

At the time, police would only say that more than two people were involved.

No shots were fired and there were no serious injuries.

One man was sent to hospital for treatment and was later released.

“He was injured by being hit,” said Walker.

He added that those involved are known to each other. Walker did say that firearm involved is believed to have been a paintball gun.

The deputy chief called the incident isolated.

“We were taking statements all day today,” he said, adding it is a complicated file to get sorted through.

Walker wouldn’t say if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Summerside police at 432-1201 or Crime Stoppers.
