The Summerside couple, parents of Olympian Heather Moyse, fly out Thursday for the Olympic village in the resort city of Sochi.
They had been putting off their decision of whether or not to attend over fears that their presence might distract their daughter and affect her performance. However, with positive reports filtering back to them from Heather, who’s been in Sochi for about a week, they’ve decided to join her.
“Things seem to quiet over there and people seem to be having fun. So we thought we’d be part of it,” said Sharon on Wednesday.
“We won’t be staying that long, but we’ll hopefully take it all in, cheer her on and get home safely,” she added.
Heather and her two-person bobsleigh teammate Kaillie Humphries won a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
They race in Sochi on Feb. 18 and 19. to defend their title.
Sharon said she’s relieved to get the OK from her daughter to come and watch.
She also said she’s unconcerned about reports, many of which stem from reporters in Sochi using social media, on the condition of some of the facilities in Sochi.
There have been reports of people walking into half-finished hotel rooms with unusable utilities, amongst other problems.
Sharon is unfazed.
“Some of the new ones were put up so quickly that they’re missing a few things. But the one we’re going to be in is sort a long-standing one that’s been up in the ski resort for a number of years. So I’m assuming and hoping that it has everything we would need,” she said.
She also said she’d like to thank Summerside for all its well wishes, to both Heather and her and Cyril.
“This town is the most incredible town for support. Through the last two Olympics, they’ve been great,” she said.
