Horse with Island ties honoured at O'Brien awards

Arthur Blue Chip, a horse with Island ties took home the award for two-year-old colt pacer during the 25th annual O’Brien Awards Saturday.

The sire of former Moore standout Shadow Play is co-owned and trained by Summerside native Dr. Ian Moore and Serge Savard, of Saint-Bruno, QC.

The colt scored six wins in 11 starts and earned $400,120 in his freshman campaign.

His most lucrative payday was a runner-up finish in the Governor’s Cup. He also won a handful of Ontario Sires Stakes races, an elimination of the Battle of Waterloo and a division of the Nassagaweya.

Three-year-old Filly Trotter Bee A Magician took home the top award from the 25th annual awards gala in Charlottetown Saturday night.

Bee a Magician was the unanimous choice in the Three-Year-old Trotting Filly division and was also awarded Canada’s Horse of the Year at the awards gala, held at the Delta Prince Edward.

The horse is co-owned by Melvin Hartman of Ottawa, ON, Herb Liverman, of Miami Beach and David H. McDuffee, of Delray Beach, FL.

The horse won all 17 of her races last season and earned more than $1.57 million for a perfect sophomore campaign.

The awards are named in honour of the late Joe O’Brien, an Alberton P.E.I. native who was a leading trainer and driver in harness racing history. This year was the first time the awards were held outside of Ontario.

A total of 18 O’Brien awards were handed out during the evening, including five person awards, 12 divisional titles and the horse-of-the-year award. The Standardbred Canada Media Awards of Excellence were also awarded at the gala.
