Credit Union Place to receive $703,089 in upgrades

SUMMERSIDE – Ottawa and Summerside are investing more than $700,000 in upgrades to Credit Union Place.

The money will be used to purchase two LED screens for the arena make upgrades to the WIFI network, increase security and safety at the CUP, and expand the current stage.

Local MP Gail Shea was in Summerside Friday to make the announcement.

“Our government, through ACOA through their Innovative Communities Fund is investing $478,100 to help the City of Summerside complete the necessary upgrades to Credit Union Place,” Shea said. “Credit Union Place plays such an important role in stimulating the local economy, not only in Summerside but in the entire region. As eastern Canada’s most state-of–the-art recreation, entertainment and meeting place, it has the capability of hosting Prince Edward Island’s largest concerts, conferences and trade shows.”

She said with the completion of the upgrades, Credit Union Place will enhance its ability to host large-scale events and meet growing demands in the entertainment industry.

“We all know that Credit Union Place is very much a happening spot,” the Shea said. “A half-a-million people come through these doors annually, from across P.E.I. and from elsewhere in the country and from around the world.”

Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart said Credit Union Place is known as the place for events on Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada and beyond.

“We’re very proud of this facility and all of the events that we host here,” Stewart said. “When we were building it, it just wasn’t a rink. It was a facility to contribute to the economy of Summerside. That has been happening. This facility contributes greatly to the economy of Summerside, the hotels and all of the businesses.”

    Congratulations, on spending money instead of creating work options or even trying to get the homeless off the street. These LED TV'S are a huge priority for everyone on pei. For that,screw everyone in politics.

    And the place is literally falling apart.Check the locker rooms as once there was fruit in a locker..........and it was there 3 weeks later.............bathrooms checked sporadically at the most..........change rooms are germ infested.........3/4 of a million on two screens......... $50 spent on a router and to keep Route 1 people employed........wow

    More federal money for bells and whisles at Credit Union Place and Red Shores while the infrastructure around Summerside is a joke....upper Central St and Pope Rd. to name a few places.

    The Cup goes 2 Million in in the hole every year. It has way to much management staff. Also every concert they get $12,000 and it costs them roughly $25,000 to host the concert. It is a mess. It needs to be fixed in other ways

    that has to be the biggest waste of money i have ever seen wow............there is bigger issues in summerside than the cup.............
