SUMMERSIDE – The City of Summerside is moving closer to hiring a full-time executive director for the Summerside Lobster Carnival.
Changes coming for 2014 Summerside Lobster Carnival..
Gordon MacFarlane, director of human resources and legal affairs, said the applications are currently being reviewed.
“The ad ran and the competition is closed,” MacFarlane said. “We’re in the midst of the competition and we’re hoping to be able to have an announcement within the next 10 days or so. It’s not finalized yet.”
The city wants to have a person in places as soon as possible as it works to revamp the 55-year-old festival.
“We did have a good cross-section of applicants,” MacFarlane said.
Late in 2012 an advisory board was struck to find ways of revitalizing the city’s premier festival.
With the Summerside Rotary Club agreeing to give up sole ownership of the lobster carnival, it was decided to bring in stakeholders who had an investment in the event.
A new board was set up involving the city, Downtown Summerside Inc., Tourism Summerside, the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce, the Boys and Girls Club of Summerside, the Newcomers Association of P.E.I. and Generation XX.
The plan is to give the Summerside Lobster Carnival a new look in 2014 to revive interest in the event.
MacFarlane said the candidate selected for the job will go through the standard municipal hiring process.
“There’s a hiring committee struck and council does have a small role at the end of the process,” he said.
