Due to the possible deficit in funds, the organization says it will be a challenge to continue to support the 23 programs the United Way currently funds across the province.
“Any Islander can attest to the fact that 2013 was a tough year across the province,” says a news release issued Monday.
“As an autonomous, charitable organization, the United Way of P.E.I. is feeling the strain as much as anyone. A few short months ago the United Way of P.E.I. was hopeful about its 2013 campaign however, it has since become apparent that overall donations have been declining and the organization is projecting a $20,000 shortfall.”
The release says a number of factors have influenced the financial pressure Islanders are feeling and this has caused the United Way of P.E.I. to turn to the public for additional help.
It says in addition to a shortfall in donations, another factor has played a role in the decline of donations to the United Way of P.E.I.
The United Way has always prided itself on their “donor option” feature, which allows donors to direct their funds to any charity of their choice through the United Way, the release says.
“This year, more ‘donor option’ choices are being directed off Island to National charities,” says David Hennessey, executive director of the United Way of P.E.I.
Hennessey is reminding Islanders that if they wish to help friends, family or neighbours, they should designate their gifts to Island chapters of national charities or make their donation to the United Way of P.E.I., which guarantees “all your donations stay on P.E.I.”
While pointing out the fundraising challenges, the United Way news release says it appreciates the generosity of those individuals and organizations that have donated thus far.
