“We’re still digging (out the wheat) and yes, we’re making progress, but it’s slow,” Truro fire Chief Blois Currie said at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. “So we’re just drenching it with water and shoveling it out, and at this point I don’t know how long it’s going to be.”

Firefighters from Truro and Hilden were called to the fire at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. They remained at the scene all day and throughout the night, emptying about 240 tonnes of wheat out of the tower by hand.

Firefighters shovelled the wheat from the bottom of the tower, and a small, front-end loader hauled it away.

About 40 firefighters were on scene.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet.
