Innovative potato packer gets federal, provincial support

ELMSDALE -- A West Prince potato grower, packer and shipper, W.P. Griffin Inc., is expanding into new markets with the help of federal and provincial investments.

Minister of Tourism Robert Henderson. Shea and Henderson visited the company to announce $372,490 in federal and provincial finding to help them expand into new markets. 

The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, is contributing a total of $323,490 to assist the Elmsdale company with the purchase of new, state-of-the-art weighing and bagging equipment and with the resources needed to market their newly developed specialty potato products across Canada. The P.E.I. Government through the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning and the Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s Growing Forward 2 Program is providing $49,000 towards the purchase of the equipment. The funding was announced Friday. Company president John Griffin said the new equipment is helping the company sell its specialty products to some of the largest retail chains in Canada.
