More than 80 for WinterFeast

MILL RIVER -- Despite the rain on Saturday afternoon, a dozen brave souls turned out for the Up West Winterfest’s longest drive competition at the Mill River Provincial Golf Course.

In an effort to give as many people as possible an opportunity to participate in the event for a chance to win some nice prizes, Winterfest coordinator, Courtney McCue said the longest drive competition will continue on Saturday, January 18.

The Western Region Sport and Recreation Council held its Winterfest Resolution Run Saturday morning in good conditions. Twenty-four people entered the 5K run and there were 17 participants for the 2K walk. For being the first-place runner, David Gamble won two tickets to the festival’s WinterBlast outdoor concert which will be held this Saturday.

Participants were encouraged to write their New Year’s resolutions on their race bibs, and most chose healthy living resolutions.

The Outdoor Fun Center at Mill River was popular Saturday until the rain chased people of the hill, trails and skating rink. The hill remained closed Sunday due to water at the bottom, but McCue is confident the fun center will be fully operational by Wednesday.

A signature event, Friday’s WinterFeast, attracted more than 80 participants. Upcoming Winterfest events include an Amazing Rally starting at Alberton Town Hall Tuesday at 6 p.m. and a trivia qualifier at 7 p.m. at Tignish Legion.
