ALBERTON -- The municipalities of Tignish, Alberton and O’Leary will play host to more than 40 events during the second annual Up West Winterfest which opens Friday.
Last year the three municipalities each played host to one day of activities before the festival moved to the Mill River Resort for the final weekend. This year the festival spotlight shines on the three communities as well as the resort throughout the 10-day Winterfest.
O’Leary, Alberton and Tignish will all host trivia, Amazing Rally and Hockey Day in West Prince events as well as many other activities. There’s a trivia qualifier at the O’Leary Legion this Friday at 7, In Tignish on Tuesday at 7 and at Albert and Crown Pub in Alberton Wednesday at 9 p.m. Trivia enthusiasts can participate in any or all of the preliminaries. The winners advance to the finale which will be held at the Rodd Mill River Friday, January 17. Quizmaster is Allan Clark.
The first Amazing Rally will be held at the Tignish Recreation Office this Monday at 6 p.m., Alberton Town Hall Tuesday at 6 and all day Wednesday at O’Leary’s Alice Duncan Center.
Other community-based events include kids sock hop in Tignish this Friday, disco skate in Alberton and teen dance in O’Leary on Saturday, pancake breakfast in Tignish, Firefighters pond hockey tournament in Alberton and Fancy Dress Skate in O’Leary on Sunday.
Tignish – Geocache competition and jersey/community day on Monday, Super Hero/Movie Star Day Tuesday, PJs and Rubber Boot Day and seniors Bingo on Wednesday, ER Day and Poker Night on Thursday and Community Park Night and fireworks on Friday.
Alberton – Pancake breakfast on Monday, Preschool storytime and open skate on Wednesday and snowball crafts and games on Friday.
O’Leary – Poker night on Monday, crib tournament on Wednesday.
An Up West Winterfest curling bonspiel starts Friday, January 17 in Alberton and O’Leary.
Special final weekend events in the communities include ice-fishing derby Saturday and Sunday in Alberton, a pancake breakfast and a senior Bingo and social in O’Leary Saturday and a movie night in Tignish on Sunday.
