STRATFORD - Shortly after 1 p.m. this afternoon Queens District RCMP responded to a six-vehicle collision on the Hillsborough Bridge. One male was slightly injured in the collision when he exited his vehicle to assist and was struck by another vehicle.
Island EMS transported the male to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was treated for a leg injury and released.
The investigation revealed that one vehicle was merging onto the west bound lane of the bridge from Route 21 in whiteout conditions when that vehicle collided with another west bound vehicle.
Both drivers stopped and exited their vehicles to exchange information when another merging vehicle slid into those two vehicles. A fourth vehicle then slid into the collision. At that point, another vehicle stopped to assist but was struck by a sixth vehicle.
Traffic was reduced by one lane during the police investigation and was re-opened as soon as vehicles were towed away.
RCMP are reminding motorists that if they are involved in a collision during whiteout conditions to pull their vehicles to a safe location prior to exchanging driver and vehicle information with others involved.
If your vehicle is inoperable after a collision in whiteout conditions, remain inside your vehicle and call 911. Unless absolutely necessary, do not exit your vehicle until first responders arrive and make the scene safe.
