Highway in area of fire reopened

KENSINGTON – A fire that ignited an outbuilding in New Annan this morning has been extinguished.

Kensington firefighters were called to the scene after a shed with a furnace inside it burned.

Summerside firefighters were asked to also attend the scene to provide additional water, if needed.

Summerside Fire Chief Jim Peters said a snowplow accompanied the Summerside fire truck to New Annan, as road conditions in this area of the province are very poor today.

Route 2 between New Annan and Travellers Rest was briefly closed to traffic before noon due to blowing snow and smoke from the nearby shed fire.

Route 2 is now open and the fire has been extinguished, Peters said.

“Kensington was able to knock it down pretty quickly, they didn’t even really need us,” he said.

Although the road is open, RCMP is still cautioning drivers to take care while driving due to the blowing snow, whiteout and poor road conditions.
