At least one person taken in by fraudulent email that says its from CRA

KENSINGTON — An email circulating telling recipients they have received a refund from the Canadian Revenue Agency is a scam, warns Kensington police Chief Lewie Sutherland.

Tuesday, Sutherland said one from an individual within his community was taken in and, as a result, had fraudulent charges on their credit card.

“This is a warning that there are emails circulating throughout Kensington and Kensington area in regards to Canada Revenue Agency advising that people have a refund and they state the amount,” said the chief. “But, then they request a whole bunch of information, so they say they can verify. One person verified and gave them their MasterCard and lo and behold they had two charges on it this morning. It was near $1,000.”

The incident was reported to police and Sutherland’s department is aware of a number of other people in the community who received the fraudulent emails.

“If you see something from Canada Revenue Agency don’t do it, call Canada Revenue Agency on the phone and they can verify it,” said the police chief. “They don’t deal through emails.”

He is encouraging anyone who receives such an email to report it to their local police immediately and then delete it.

“We certainly want to know,” added Sutherland.

Canada Revenue Agency, on its website — http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/cntct/menu-eng.html — has a warning about fraudulent communications, including suspicious emails, and has posted instructions on what to do in such an incidence.

It indicates that the CRA does not do the following:

—   The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.

—   The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.

—   The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine.
