VERNON BRIDGE – A barn full of hay bales on Riverview Crescent burnt to the ground here late Saturday night.
The Vernon River Fire Department received a call reporting the blaze, which saw no people or livestock injured, at 11:54 p.m.
The provincial fire marshal’s office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
Fire chief Allister Veinot said firefighters arrived just after midnight to discover the structure was fully ablaze and had already collapsed.
Firefighters remained at the scene for more than 11 and a half hours and had to move the bales around with an excavator in order to extinguish the fire.
“It was the stubbornness of the fire because round bales can burn forever,” said Veinot.
Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to a nearby residence and another structure.
Montague and Crossroads fire departments also attended the blaze.
Veinot said firefighters used about 40,000 gallons of water extinguishing the fire.
“We hauled a lot of water between the three departments,” he said.
