SUMMERSIDE – The City of Summerside has taken the somewhat unusual move of warning families not to build snow forts or tunnels near sidewalks or streets.

he city decided to issue the warning after one of its staff noticed kids digging into a hill of snow over a section of sidewalk. Crews were still working to clear snow at the time.

“Sometimes holes in the mounds of snow are hard to spot, and I mean if there was a kid in there – it could end disastrously,” said Gaudet. Director of Municipal Services.

The city instituted a new policy about five years ago that demands a spotter vehicle accompany their large snow blowers while they work.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen the blowers, but they’re huge rigs, some of the big ones. The operator wouldn’t even necessarily be able to see that well over them,” he said.

He suggested that the best place for playing in the snow is a back yard or somewhere else away from the road.
