CHARLOTTETOWN – Island RCMP are offering safety tips for the public during this Christmas holiday season.

Sgt. Andrew Blackadar said Friday that the Mounties will be mounting a small media and social media campaign over the next two weeks to help inform people on safety issues.

Anyone who’s interested can follow the P.E.I. RCMP on Twitter at @RCMPPEI

"The RCMP will be working over the holidays to help keep our communities safe, but taking a few simple steps to protect yourself can help ensure a safe and happy holiday for you and your loved ones," said Blackadar.

The first round of tips include:

·      Do your online holiday shopping from sites with secure checkouts (https) or use a secure online payment service.

·      Travelling? Have someone get mail, clear snow, and turn lights on and off so your home appears occupied.

·      Keep presents out of sight. Place gifts where they cannot be seen through a door or window.

·      Be discreet when disposing of boxes from big ticket items like TVs so they're not seen by thieves.

·      Holidays can mean more travellers on the road. Stay alert, and reduce speeds in winter weather.

·      Always wear your seatbelt, and if you drink this holiday season, don't drive.

That last point was stressed by the Mounties.

“For RCMP members, there's nothing worse than having to tell a family their loved one won't be coming home.  Everyone deserves to arrive at their holiday destinations alive,” wrote Blackadar.
