SUMMERSIDE - The Journal Pioneer has learned that the unsightly property at 506 Sheen St. will be demolished Friday morning.
The building has been vacant for a number of years and neighbouring residents have complained to city council that the property is an eyesore and has been the home for drug users, raccoons and rats.
The owner of the property is deceased and, according to Councillor Peter Holman, the city has been unable to locate anyone who holds the title to the property.
Holman raised the issue earlier this week with city council saying action was needed to either find someone who would take responsibility for the property or raze the building.
On Monday night, city council passed a resolution calling on city staff to take the appropriate action to find anyone who would claim title to the property. If someone could be found, they would have a year to bring the property up to code.
If staff was unsuccessful, the technical services department was given the authorization to demolish the building.
The city wasted little time in determining that the proper solution was to demolish the building.
