Snowmobile collision claims life

COLEMAN -- An 18 year-old male from the Bloomfield Corner area was killed Wednesday morning when his snowmobile collided with a tree in Coleman, RCMP report.

Police, along with Island EMS and the O’Leary Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 911 call shortly after 11 a.m.

Sgt Andrew Blackadar, the RCMP’s media relations officer, said the snowmobiler, who was alone on his sled, died at the scene. Another snowmobiler on a second sled was travelling with the victim at the time. The incident occurred along the Confederation Trail about one kilometer east of the Terry Boylan Road. Police observed tracks where the snowmobile went off the south side of the trail and traveled about 25 feet before crashing into a tree.

It was snowing heavily at the time.

The O’Leary Volunteer Fire Department utilized its rescue sled to reach the victim.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation and police are withholding the name of the victim until confirmation that next of kin have been notified.
